a bushel and a peck

Ever since watching 'Julie & Julia' I've been in love with this song. I'm trying to decide which version to download on itunes...sigh...perhaps I shall just purchase all of these beautiful versions!

 

Doris Day - this is the version from the movie. Crisp, clear lovely voice as usual!

The Andrews Sisters - I just love these girls! Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy was a masterpiece and their harmony and strength come through with this song and I'm taken!

Betty Hutton & Perry Como - Okay what's not to love about the great Perry Como? I admit I hadn't heard of Betty Hutton before now, but will surely look into her as I was mightily impressed by her voice.

Don't you just love 1950's songs? I adore their innocent ways of touching on the well, not so innocent.

And if you're wondering what a bushel and a peck are, well the simplest way to put it is: they are old units of measure. A bushel being a lot, a peck being a little (so many pecks make a bushel).

Vintage Jewellery Pressies

My lovely friend Stephanie gave me the above vintage jewellery a few months ago now. My favourite necklace however, is not in the above photos as I have another post I'm saving up to show you that one!

I doubt it would surprise anyone that I've displayed these on my records - as it's easy to tell I'd be a record lover! Having a record player set up for frequent (or not so frequent) use is a timeless joy! Nothing beats the crackle before a gentle jazz tune. Perfectly suitable backdrop for vintage jewellery I think.

Can anyone tell by my latest posts I'm getting rather into the 1900's-1940's era's? Anyone else adoring the allure of those times?

10th-of-december-phobia

The 10th of December. It's fast approaching. What's so special about it? I've been asked to perform a song or two at a music night down south of Sydney...in front of say 150 people. Eeek! I've never had the guts to do this before, but as the organiser Dave, said, I must cross it off my 'bucket list'. Here's hoping I don't chicken out at the last minute. I've decided even if it goes poorly, at least I did it!

I've been trying to practise, but also just trying to put a spark into the music I am listening to, so as to keep my joy alive about music and not just get caught up in nerves and the like. Tom and I purchased two CD's - Grouplove - they are very good, I knew quite a few songs from the radio and so many different sounds, but not as much as Kimbra whose CD we also bought. Man am I loving her album Vows! Apparently a famous blogger likened her music to Nina Simone, Florence and the Machine and Bjork. She also reminded me of Feist. She's from New Zealand but now lives in Melbourne, Australia (you know how I love my local music!) I was amazed at how different each track is. There are a few on the slower side but really drawn out by her beautiful voice. I loved how 90's the track 'Call Me' was it took me by surprise how well executed it was. Overall she has a rather Jazzy sound which is addictive! Do have a listen...now. pause, open up a new page and search everything on her!

Yes - she's the voice in the infamous "Somebody that I used to know" with Gotye - so chilling.

The Seekers - I borrowed my mother's 6 record collection of seekers songs and I'm loving it! They were Aussie as far as I know, however I couldn't help thinking how Irish or something they sounded - kind of like Laura Marling? 'Train Whistle Blowing' was always my favourite as my mother would sing us to sleep with it. I cherish that now I can soothe Max with the same song.

 I love her dress, now vintage, I thought the right person wold look great in it as a wedding dress!

Bank Dance

I just adore this performance by Joseph Gorden-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel promoting the movie 500 days of summer (which I also adore) and featuring the song Why do you let me stay here? by She and Him (adoration #3) Needless to say I'm feelin lots of love for the whole darn thing. Near Yerranderie in the middle of nowhere we found this blossom! There were ruins of a village left by gold rush period nearby so my guess is it was planted way back then, only to look odd amongst the kangaroos and wattle trees surrounding.
